We're Off
1 out of 8 shots |
The 2 years of planning and saving for our journey is finally over. It's the night before we leave, and it is finally starting to sink in. The past week has been so hectic with packing up our apartment and moving, that there hasn't been a chance to think about the trip. It wasn't until we were completely moved out and had time to take a breather that I started to realize that magnitude of the trip. We have talked with so many people over the past year about our route that it started to seem like I was reciting something rather than describing our upcoming adventure. South America, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa. Today it hit me that we are actually going to visit these places and are not coming home for a long time.

Our last couple days were a mix of packing and trying to spend time with everyone. We had a great going away party with our friends consisting of a day at the beach playing various games meant for children, and then a BBQ in the eveining. It was exactly what we wanted...nice and low key. It gets too hard to talk to everyone and say goodbye when there are so many people. I was even given a ceremonious travel haircut with shears that I were assured had only been used on the dog once.
Of course the last minute preparations would not be complete without a high degree of stress. This came in the form of me losing Sinead's passport. I went to make photocopies of all our documents and became worried when I couldn't find her passport. This turned into a frantic search through all of our gear in hoped that it had been packed somewhere else. I returned to Kinkos to scour the area and sure enough, the passport was there on the floor behind the photocopier. The stress level returned to normal and we enjoyed a nice farewell evening with our family.
Now I lie here hoping that everything has been finished and packed. Tickets...check....passports...check....insanely heavy backpack....check. I guess all that is left is to try and get some sleep.
**Airport Update: To add a further degree of stress to our departure, upon arriving to the airport to check in, we realized that we forgot all the tickets at Sinead's parents place in Tsawwassen. Her mom and dad did a mad rush back home to pick up the tickets and we somehow managed to make it ok. We have made up a new rule: Instead of asking "Do you have the tickets?" we will now say "Show me the tickets!"
